Melton resident Carolyn MacGavin shares her love of music

Carolyn MacGavin, 69, has been on the airwaves for the past three decades, sharing her love of music and quirky facts about famous musicians.

She talks with Sumeyya Ilanbey.

What’s your connection to Melton?

I’ve been living in Melton for 43 years.

My children and granchildren are also living in the same town.

We moved from Footscray … because we had a young family and my late husband had a block of land up here.

What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton?

The fresh environment and not feeling crammed in.

I do like the old Melton, but I don’t think we could go backwards.

I miss the simple things – we used to be known when we went to the shops.

What would you change about the area if you could?

What would I change? Not that much.

Maybe a better shopping development down in Melton South.

I think Woodgrove is big enough, but it’s gotten too busy.

I live in Melton South … a shopping centre down here would be a good idea.

Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton?

I like the Golden Fleece Hotel and Matildas, the new coffee shop at Melton South.

The coffee shop is nice and new and the people are nice.

How did you get involved with Melton 979fm?

I was interviewed by a lady and she said, “You would be good on radio” – that was 30 years ago.

I like to share my taste in music … I like to share my knowledge.

I read up about various things, such as musicians’ real given names.

What makes a good radio broadcaster?

I think the presentation and the person being interested in the music.

We’ve got a [specific] age audience at lunchtime – you like to think we’re catering for them and you’re not playing heavy metal.

Any defining moments during your on-air role?

At one stage I used to do interviews … I used to have all the council candidates come in and have a conversation.

It made me aware of what the community needs are.

Ms MacGavin presents a show every Wednesday from noon-2pm, on Melton 979fm.
