Solid comfort: 379 Centenary Avenue, Melton West, 3337

Solidly built on a conventional slab, this spacious house is one that has the timeless appeal of pitched ceilings and exposed beams of cedar, slate on floors and exposed brickwork.

However, an atrium with tropical plantings and a pond, right at the centre of the house, transcends the “average” and admits streams of natural light into interior spaces.

Entry under a porch is to a hallway, with a step-down lounge room on the right. This has patterned carpet and an old-school gas heater and adjoins a step-up dining room under the first of the pitched cedar ceilings. Both these rooms, and the kitchen, have views of the atrium with its “bringing the outdoors in” effect.

The kitchen, with slate floor tiles, has a stack of American oak cabinetry, a dishwasher and a 900mm gas cooktop. This adjoins a casual meals area which, in turn, connects with a step-down rumpus room – so there’s plenty of space for a family to spread out.

The main bedroom, with black plantation shutters and a pink/lilac feature wall (a colour used as an accent elsewhere as well), has a walk-in robe and en suite with timber vanity.

Three more fitted bedrooms share a rear hallway with main bathroom with cedar features and laundry with closet.

The meals area opens to a full-width pergola which looks out to the pool and lawn planted with palm trees. The fenced pool is solar-heated and has a spa seat, while concrete surrounds it and a shade cloth-clad pergola sheltering tropical plantings runs along the back Colorbond fence.

Also on offer are ducted heating, air-conditioners, ceiling fans, alarm, awnings, a 2000-litre water tank and garden shed and double carport.

Wedge Park and St Catherine’s primary schools and Catholic Regional College are each within 800 metres or less; Woodgrove shopping centre is four minutes away by car. The block is about 810 square metres.
