Rural escape: 1668 Mount Cottrell Road, Mount Cottrell, 3024

This contemporary country haven, with about 3845 square metres to play on, is a true oasis for a family wanting to be out of the hustle and bustle of life.

But it’s not out of the way when it comes to convenience: Exford and Rockbank primary schools are both seven-minute car trips away, while Western Freeway is 10, taking you in one direction to Melton in 10 minutes and the other all the way to Docklands in about 30.

At the end of a long driveway past sweeping lawn dotted with trees and garden areas, arrival is at more low-maintenance gardens celebrating the essential rural look.

Entry to the house is directly into an expansive living room laid with timeless slate floor tiles; it also has the natural timber lintels, skirts, architraves and window frames seen all through the house which add much character.

Living spaces are more than ample here. There’s also a family-meals space adjoining the kitchen which has matte floorboards, a grey accent wall and a wood heater.

And then there’s a separate rumpus room which, as does the family room, accesses the east-facing gable-roofed outdoor dining area.

The main bathroom and toilet are separate, while the laundry is a good size and has good storage.

The smart modern kitchen has loads of mid-grey cabinetry, pale timber benches including a brekkie bar for at least five – under contemporary pendants – white subway splashback tiles and a french-door pantry and 900mm cooker.

As well as a study (or fifth bedroom), there are four fitted and carpeted bedrooms, the main with grey accent wall, a walk-in robe and an en suite with the vanity trimmed with timber.

A big grey Colorbond shed has an attached carport, and behind this is a vast lawn for the kids to have a kick of the footy or to plant, perhaps, some fruit trees or whack up a chook run.

And another alfresco area out back
allows kicking back to watch the glorious sunsets.

Other features at this fine property include multiple ceiling fans, heating and cooling and a double carport. Nearby heritage-listed forests come for free.

The planned outer ring road will be four minutes away, the planned new Ferris Road town centre about five.
