Live a life uncommon: 135 Mcphersons Road, Toolern Vale, 3337

Built in the early ’80s by Domenic Ambrogio, the founder of Dona Homes, this remarkable double-brick residence – constructed into a hillside to form three levels – has all the hallmarks of a master craftsman.

Down a country lane, the picturesque property, spanning about 8.5 hectares divided into grazing land, pony paddocks and grey box forest, has two dams and a seasonal creek. The house precinct features native gardens, with lofty cypresses forming sheltering perimeters.

The extravagant use in every room of cedar on towering raked ceilings, window frames, walls and all joinery combines with exposed brickwork, polished slate flooring, New Zealand wool carpeting – and lightfittings to thrill the heart of retro aficionados – to deliver a truly unique place.

The open-plan entry level includes a lounge room with leadlight feature window, chocolate velvet drapes and a wood heater (with back vent); a dining room; a casual meals area with side verandah access; and the kitchen. The latter has deep-drawer cabinetry, slate benchtops, walk-in pantry, servery and breakfast benches to the meals area, a wall oven, 900mm electric cooktop and a dishwasher.

Nine steps head up to a vast mezzanine entertainment room with billiard table, wood heater and bar with storage. This room opens to a sheltered, brick-paved courtyard with in-ground pool and spa.

Seven steps rise from the entertainment room to a carpeted gallery landing, off which are the three fitted bedrooms, the large main bathroom, a walk-in closet and a big laundry with adjoining toilet. Preceding the main bedroom is a great parent retreat room with pot belly heater, book shelves and side verandah access, plus a fitted dressing room and an en suite with spa and separate toilet.

Looking down from the landing is a reminder of the grandeur of proportions found here. It’s a place to fall in love with and, with a lick of paint here and update there, promises to be a family home where quality and classicism are celebrated.

Other assets include a 22,500-litre water tank, a dog run, two rustic sheds, a double carport and a double garage.
