Three young children were hospitalised on Saturday after the car they were in performed a U-turn and was struck by another car on the Western Freeway at Ballan.
A female passenger aged in her 40s, and believed to be the children’s mother, was also injured.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said a toddler suffered head injuries after the car rolled on the Western Freeway shortly after noon.
The boy was flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
Another boy and a girl, both aged under 10, were driven by ambulance to the same hospital with cuts and abrasions, while the woman was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with back and neck soreness.
Their condition is stable.
Victoria Police spokesman, Leading Senior Constable Paul Turner, said the male driver was expected to be fined.
“It appears one car has attempted to perform a U-turn when another vehicle has collided into the back of it,” he said.
“A woman and three children who were passengers in the first car performing the U-turn were taken to hospital with injuries.
“The male driver of the first vehicle is expected to be issued with an infringement notice for performing an unsafe U-turn.”
