Blue Ribbon racing event

On February 19, Steve Lyon’s thoughts will be with colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Leading Senior Constable Lyon, of Melton police, knows only too well the sombre mood in the office when a copper’s death is announced.

“My initial thoughts are, it could have been any one of us, given the nature of the job.

“Any one of us could be in a situation facing danger.

“There’s always a feeling of grief and sadness when this sort of thing happens. It brings home the thought of mortality.”

Leading Senior Constable Lyon has joined the Blue Ribbon Foundation and is calling on locals to remember the 159 Victorian police “who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their community”.

The foundation’s Westgate branch is going one step further with a dinner and drinks fundraiser at a harness meeting at Melton’s Tabcorp Park on Friday, February 19.

All funds raised will be donated to a local hospital’s emergency department to buy medical equipment.

Leading Senior Constable Lyon is urging Melton and Moorabool residents to think about emergency service workers who sacrificed their lives, and donate to a worthy cause.

Tickets are $85 per person and bookings can be made via trybooking.com/JWMR
