Scotsburn farmers swamped with generosity

Scotsburn farmers have been overwhelmed by the generosity of Victorians.

Members of several Lions Clubs across the state and the Need for Feed group loaded their trucks and utes with hay and delivered it to Scotsburn farmers on Australia Day.

A grassfire zig-zagged through Scotsburn and surrounding towns on December 19, burning 3000 hectares and destroying 11 homes and 55 buildings.

According to Moorabool council’s Post Impact Assessment Report, other damage included one house damaged but habitable; one house damaged but not habitable; 45 water tanks affected; about 4000 animals killed; and hundreds of kilometres of fencing destroyed.

Need for Feed co-ordinator Graham Cockerell said his team exemplified the true spirit of being Australian on Australia Day.

“In Scotsburn, the farmers were already suffering from the drought and then the fires hit them,” Mr Cockerell said.

“We felt like they’d been forgotten after the Wye River fires took all the publicity.

“There was a pretty incredible response by the farmers [on Tuesday] – it was quite emotional. There were locals lining the streets, waving and cheering and clapping.”
