Lion cubs eye finals

Melton remains in finals contention after the opening week of Victorian Sub-District Cricket’s under-15 JG Craig Shield.

The Lions are third on the west ladder after last week’s first four rounds, with the top two teams in each of the four divisions to qualify for finals.

The Lions made the perfect start with a thrilling win over Sunshine in their opening match.

Batting first, they compiled 119, Jack Watkins the standout with 62.

It appeared that wouldn’t be enough as, led by 77 from Prasanna Ketheenshwaran, Sunshine closed in on the total.

But eventually it pulled up short, making 5-115 from the allotted overs to hand the Lions victory by four runs.

After a bye in round two, the Lions faced Hoppers Crossing in round three and again it was an easy win. After making 124, the Lions skittled the Cats for 72.

The Lions shared the bowling around, with all but the wicketkeeper getting the chance to roll an arm over.

On Sunday, the Lions fell short against Altona. Altona made 8-202 after being sent in, captain Tommi Wesley top-scoring with 78.

The Lions could manage only 9-141 in reply, opener Justin Newton leading the charge with 58.

Their next match is against Yarraville on Tuesday, followed by meetings with Williamstown and Werribee.
