BFNL gong for veteran Melton South volunteer

Almost 15 years ago, the then president of the Melton South Football Netball Club convinced Leigh Morcom to volunteer. He’s been treasurer ever since.

The Melton South grandfather has been honoured by the Ballarat Football Netball League with the Keith Lawrence Recognition of Service award, for his “outstanding” contribution to the club.

Mr Morcom said he enjoyed giving back to the community, helping out the local footy club and seeing the junior players blossom.

“Being able to be involved in an executive capacity at the club has been of great interest to me,” Mr Morcom said.

“As a volunteer, I’ve not only helped the players but have been able to get involved in discussions about [club] infrastructure.”

And while his family was not the least bit surprised – Mr Morcom spends “a lot” of time at the club – they were all proud of him.

“Volunteering does take a fair amount of my time during the winter especially,” he said. “So they were really proud of me and rapt when I won the award.”

At a recent league meeting, Mr Morcom was commended for his trustworthiness and dedication.

“Regardless of the role undertaken, Leigh always does it with a smile and never with a complaint,” a statement from the league said.
