Are you fire and water ready?

An independent water supply is crucial for people planning to stay and defend their homes during a bushfire, according to Western Water managing director Neil Brennan.

Mr Brennan is warning Melton and Moorabool residents not to rely on mains’ water this fire season, but to plan ahead before it’s too late.

“If electricity is cut or our infrastructure is affected by fire, our pumps may fail, cutting the mains water supply,” Mr Brennan said.

“If we have extremely high demand for water from customers and the Country Fire Authority during a fire, water pressure may also drop.”

Western Water has back-up generators and storage tanks are kept at capacity in case of an emergency.

Mr Brennan said the organisation was “doing all we can” to be ready for the fire season, but advised people to speak to their local CFA crews about independent water supplies.

He said residents could also do their bit to help keep the community safe by “adopting” a fire hydrant.

“You can help by keeping fire hydrants near your home free of debris and vegetation. If you think a hydrant needs maintenance, call us to report it, send us a message on Facebook or fill in a form on our website.”
