Man fights for life after Kurunjang shooting

A quiet street in Kurunjang has been rocked by a shooting on Friday night that has left a man fighting for life.

One man, in his 20s, was shot and two others have been hospitalised following a brawl.

Police say four men were involved in an altercation in Dalray Crescent about 11pm.

It appears the man who was shot in the upper body had been trying to jump-start a vehicle in the quiet cul-de-sac.

Resident Rachael Fino was in bed with her 10-year-old daughter, Hayley, when they heard two gunshots.

“We had a look through the window and we could see a lot of people yelling,” she said.

“Probably about six people yelling and screaming and carrying on.

“There was a body down under that tree… the guy was pretty badly wounded.

“By that stage I saw someone run down the street with a stick and he was yelling out, ‘Call triple zero, help, help, the other guy’s got a gun’.”

Another resident, Kristy, who asked that her last name not be used, said she heard gunshots and went outside.

“As I opened the door, two guys were running,” she said.

“They were just here saying, ‘Call triple 0, call triple 0’, and it looked like they were starting to come up this way.

“I slammed my door, locked it, and my back door, and ran to my kids.”

Elizabeth Cassar said she heard two loud shots and screaming.

“I ran out to see what was going on when I heard somebody say something similar to, ‘I’ve been shot’ or ‘You’re shooting at me’, and that’s when I ran inside and called the police,” she said.

“After that we heard some screaming. I saw a guy walk this way. I’m assuming he was one of the attackers.

“When I came out, there’s two cars parked there. One had the bonnet up.

“We were told something similar to they were fixing the cars and somebody’s attacked them.

“We don’t know them, we’ve never seen them before.”

Armed Crime detectives say two of the men produced a firearm and hammer.

Two others injured

The Kurunjang man who was shot remains at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Another Kurunjang man, aged in his 50s, was taken to Footscray Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

A 27-year-old man was taken to the same hospital with assault-related injuries and is assisting police with their enquiries.

A man aged in his 20s is also assisting police.

Two station wagons remain at the scene parked head-to-head, with jumper leads on the ground beside them.

In one vehicle, a man’s wallet lies on the driver’s seat next to a can of Jim Beam Devil’s Cut in the drink holder.

The front of the Holden Commodore has damage to the front and the bonnet is popped.

The second vehicle is a Suzuki Grand Vitara.

Investigators are appealing for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
