NEW AMBULANCE STATION ‘NOT THE ANSWER’ (Weekly, February 18)

■ A new ambulance station in Melton is a fantastic improvement. But the fact is, there are not enough ambulances in the region to meet community needs.

A lot of time and resources is wasted by people calling an ambulance for non-urgent needs.

Melton and Bacchus Marsh ambos provide a fantastic service. I salute them for having saved my life in the past.

All Victorian ambos deserve fair pay and working conditions.

We need trained, quality ambulance officers. I support the Code Red campaign and hope our ambos get a fair deal.

■ I don’t propose to weigh in on any political debate, but I feel very sorry for the family of Melton paramedic Peter Watson. His career was dedicated to serving the community and he couldn’t even have his moment in the sun. Shame on the protesters.

DAY CARE AXED (Weekly, February 18)

■ The family day care service in Moorabool has been operating for 31 years and is required to operate within the National Education and Care Law Act.

The decision to axe this program has nothing to do with the “private sector” – it is all about money and council incompetence, and the council moving to a model where it operates only in its core business of roads and rubbish. What is next on the list to cut? Meals on wheels, library, senior citizens, footy grounds, maternal health?

What about the shire staff, educators and local families who will be left high and dry, as there are few childcare vacancies in Bacchus Marsh.

In any case, low-income families will not be able to afford the high charges of the private sector.

The arrogance of our elected officials to do this all in secret is appalling. Hope this all means a rate decrease for the next year.
