The junior school council at Melton South Primary hosted its first fundraising event for the year last week, helping to do its bit for the Good Friday Appeal.
Pupils were invited to come to school out of uniform and with a gold coin donation.
The casual dress day was a hit with the pupils, who helped the school raise about $720 for the appeal.
Grade 6 teacher Ben Bykersma said the contributions of all involved had helped raise a “sizeable sum”.
He said casual days were “very, very popular” as the pupils loved to come to school out of uniform. This year the junior school council is about four times bigger than in previous years due to a strong interest from pupils in joining.
About 40 pupils from grade 5 and 6 make up the council, which previously has had only a dozen pupils on board.
Mr Bykersma said the school’s leadership program encouraged pupils to take on roles with the junior school council, the choir and sports so as to experience responsibility and leadership.
He said the eagerness of pupils to be involved was amazing and many applications had been received to join the council.
The junior school council is made up of three sub-committees, which look after fundraisers, school assemblies and play-time activities for younger pupils.
