WSUCCA: Eynesbury’s charge to shield continues

Eynesbury’s relentless charge towards another A.E Lowe Shield continued at the weekend with a gritty win over Charles Sturt University.

Despite posting a low total, the Eagles ripped the heart out of the home side’s top order before surviving some nervous late moments to clinch their 10th win of the year. Batting first, Eynesbury found itself in uncustomary trouble at 2-18. The arrival of Todd Newman at the crease settled the nerves and the runs started to flow.

Newman was the dominant batsman with 52, but with no one else passing 20 it was always going to be a hard slog.

Scoring quickly, the Eagles were all out for 140 in the 29th over but soon had the game by the scruff of the neck with some inspired new-ball bowling.

Charles Sturt Uni collapsed to 5-1 with Blair Sole and Justin Siedlecki wiping out half of the home side with just six runs on the board.

Despite their perilous state, the Uni boys fought out the game. Muhammad Shinwari (52) and Sampath De Silva (42) got them back into the contest, but it wasn’t to be. The Eagles rallied late in the day to secure a narrow win and keep their perfect season intact.

Sole, 3-14, was superb early and picked up the big wicket of Shinwari, while Siedlecki, 5-30, did the damage at both ends of the innings, grabbing three early scalps before returning to clean up the tail.
