Melton police blitz nets drink and drug drivers

Melton highway patrol is warning drivers about the crippling effects of driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

During a statewide operation over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, Melton police conducted more than 1500 breath tests and detained five drivers who exceeded the blood-alcohol limit.

Acting Sergeant Craig Kelso said it was “still disappointing” that even a single driver was getting caught exceeding the blood-alcohol limit.

“People know we’re out there and there are still people committing offences while under the influence of drugs and alcohol,” he said.

“Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is one of the main causes of deaths and serious injuries on our roads.”

Melton police detected two people driving while suspended, seven who were unlicensed, 14 unregistered vehicles, 15 speeding offences, two mobile phone offences and two seatbelt offences. They impounded two cars.

In Moorabool, two drivers were caught drink-driving, one for driving while disqualified and one for being unlicensed. Six unregistered vehicles, 63 speeding offences and one driver disobeying road signs were detected.

Acting Sergeant Kelso said police also detected a number of learner drivers who were driving unsupervised.

“It’s imperative they are on the roads with a qualified driver,” he said. “They need that guidance within the vehicle and the hours under their belt to become safe drivers.”
