While manufacturing is the number one field of employment for Melton residents, most in the industry have to travel outside the municipality to work.
Figures included in Melton council’s economic development and tourism plan show that 13 per cent of Melton residents work in manufacturing.
Eleven per cent work in retail, trade and construction, and 10 per cent in transport, postal and warehousing.
The high number of residents working in manufacturing hasn’t translated to jobs within the municipality, with there being only 1100 local jobs.
The manufacturing workers are part of the 82 per cent of Melton residents who travel outside the municipality to work.
The retail industry, which has received a boost with the recent upgrade of Woodgrove shopping centre, provides the most local jobs, followed by education and training, and construction.
