GDCA: Bacchus Marsh win leaves St Anthony’s in danger

A top-order collapse derailed St Anthony’s as Bacchus Marsh won by five wickets in McIntyre Cup on Saturday.

The defeat leaves St Anthony’s outright last on the ladder and back in major relegation danger after unfavourable results elsewhere.

St Anthony’s was no match for Bacchus Marsh’s opening bowlers Brenton Payne (2-7) and Rhys Watson (3-22).

Warren Haffenden rallied with the tail to get St Anthony’s to 104, but Bacchus Marsh needed just 33 overs to reach 5-105 in reply.

Wallan led by 81 on the first innings against Sunbury United but was unable to claim an outright. United made 2-78 in its second dig before stumps was called.

At Romsey, visiting Sunbury captured the first outright win of the season to go outright top of the league. Sunbury declared with 9-113, a 10-run first innings lead, then bowled out Romsey for 107.

Sunbury then flailed the Romsey attack to make 1-101 in nine overs.

In the weekend’s other match, Riddell (6-251) beat Woodend (161).

In B-grade, Diggers Rest Bulla Village lost to Sunbury United second XI.

United made 5-136 off 40 overs before Jason Collins (4-23) and James Hughes (3-13) ripped through Diggers Rest Bulla Village in 29.3 overs for a score of 69.

Gisborne also suffered batting woes as Rupertswood (7-142) comfortably defended its total by rolling the Dragons for 76.

Gisborne (36) still leads by a game from the Burras (30) at the top of the ladder.
