COAL SEAM GAS (Weekly, October 15)

As Macalister Irrigation District (MID) farmers anticipate Peter Ryan fulfilling dreams of making the area a no-go zone for coal seam gas mining, one is left to ponder the fate of the other irrigators.

Will Werribee, Bacchus Marsh and Yarram farmers still need to picket and bolt themselves to drilling equipment like their NSW and Queensland counterparts?

Laser-graded paddocks are the last thing Mr Ryan and the state government want to pay compensation for, when you consider the risk of subsidence due to ground water extraction from coal seam mining.

Does that make MID farmers more important than the rest?

My husband and I have decided not to buy land to build a house at Bacchus Marsh. It’s a beautiful place and the coal seam miners should stay away.
