CHBD: Bacchus Marsh too good for Woodend

Bacchus Marsh won an early-season show of strength to strip Woodend of its unbeaten status by seven shots in CHBD division 1 on Saturday.

Lancefield (47 points) and Bacchus Marsh (47) are the last undefeated teams standing after the Marsh won 14-101 to 4-94 against Woodend (third, 40).

League-leading Woodend skip Matthew Bacon won his rink, but the big margins went in Bacchus Marsh’s favour as Dylan Filuk beat Jim Lefevre 31-24 and Alan Maher won 31-22 against Ian Matthews.

At Kyneton, Lancefield was pushed but ultimately emerged with a 14-101 to 4-93 win.

The match was split two rinks each, with Peter Linehan’s 28-20 win against Andrew Murphy the most lopsided of the day.

Romsey is off the mark at winless Trentham’s expense, with three of its four rinks winning in a 16-113 to 2-87 result.

Cam Austin was Romsey’s biggest winner as his rink was up 29-14 against Barry Skoglund, while Paul Hinneberg was Trentham’s only victorious skip, winning 29-28 against Romsey’s Neil Coker.

In the weekend’s other match, Kyneton Golf swept Gisborne 18-122 to 0-69.

In division 2, Woodend seconds continued their perfect start to the season with a 14-40 to 4-87 win against Bacchus Marsh seconds. Woodend-2 (46 points) leads the division by 10 points from Diggers Rests firsts (2-1, 36), with Macedon’s firsts third (2-1, 32).

Diggers Rest defeated Kyneton 16-104 to 2-87, while Macedon won 16-103 to 2-83 against Mount Cottrell.

In the weekend’s other match, Gisborne 14-93 defeated Kyneton Golf 4-91.

In division 3, Kyneton Red and Bacchus Marsh-3 are the only unbeaten teams after Bacchus Marsh-3 won 12-78 to 2-65 against previously unbeaten Lancefield-3.

Kyneton Red received a walk-over from Mount Cottrell to stay top (40 points) from Bacchus Marsh (38), with Woodend (28) and Romsey (24) rounding out the top four.

In other results, Kyneton Blue 14-83 defeated Gisborne 0-46, Romsey 10-65 beat the Diggers Rest-Macedon combine 4-63, and Woodend 14-70 accounted for Trentham 0-55.

In Bowls Victoria’s Saturday Pennant, Melton’s rapid rise hit a reality check as Brighton-2 handed out a 40-shot hiding.

Melton’s top team has won back-to-back promotions since joining the metro leagues but is back to earth in division 1 section 2 with the 16-104 to 2-64 result.

Melton has two wins and two losses from its first month in the second-tier league, its
34 points putting it sixth of 10 on the table.

In division 3 section 1, Melton-2 won 124-61 against Sunshine VRI. Melton-3 won 97-69 against Deer Park-2, and Melton-4 lost 116-43 against Footscray Park-2.
