Driver lucky as car bursts into flames

A CAR became engulfed in flames yesterday after debris on the Western Highway became entangled in the engine.

Some hay fell from a truck and moved underneath the car at Rockbank.

CFA station officer Michael Masters said the driver was very lucky to avoid serious injury.

Mr Masters said other drivers brought the fire to the attention of the driver. He said she was travelling from Melbourne to Ballarat.

A passerby tried to contain the fire with an extinguisher but was unable to contain the flames and called the CFA at 12.36pm.

The driver was not injured but her 2004 Mercedes Benz coupe was destroyed.

Nine firefighters from Melton and Caroline Springs attended and contained the fire within five minutes.
