MELTON’S Riding for the Disabled Association branch will host the state competition on April 29 after its win at last year’s titles in Bendigo.
The Tan Hock Chong State Games, named after a Singapore benefactor, gives children of all abilities the opportunity to be involved in the competitive ceremony of the sport.
More than 30 riders aged 5-18 from across Victoria will take part on the day.
Melton RDA head coach and co-ordinator Margaret Behan said her students were looking forward to the event.
“Any child can compete, [it] doesn’t matter what their disability is. In other competitions, they need to be able to ride and handle a horse on their own, but for our state games, they can have side walkers and leaders are able to help,” she said.
Ms Behan said the program delivered physical benefits to children with cerebral palsy and allowed those with autism and or intellectual disabilities to learn interaction and behavioural skills.
Mr Tan’s daughter, Ivy, will for the first time present the competitors with their trophies and medals. “It is an honour for the us to be able to host the games. It will also be a great day for parents and their families to have an understanding of the kind of sport we are involved in.”
The event is at the Melton Equestrian Park, Bulmans Road, Melton 10.30am-3.30pm and include performances and bareback riding display. Details: rda.org.au.
