TWO community campaigners have decided to run for council in this year’s election.
Melton father and 979FM community radio host Simon Ellis and hospital campaigner John Southall are among the first to declare their intentions ahead of the October 27 election.
Mr Ellis said one of the great aspects of living in Melton was the willingness of people to help each other.
It is something he hopes to bring to the council if he’s successful in his election bid.
“I’m hoping to achieve a unity within council. As it stands the council is not being productive enough with a 3-4 split,” Mr Ellis said.
“The council needs to work together to make the correct decisions.”
Mr Ellis said public transport would be a key focus.
“Even though public transport is a state issue, there is nothing wrong with the council arranging for private bus companies to build upon existing services.”
Mr Ellis, who has lived in the shire for nine years, said being involved in community projects and groups had exposed him to the issues faced by residents.
“Running for council is not for personal gain.
I am here for the community to give them an opportunity to speak about issues affecting them.”
Mr Southall, who has long campaigned for a 24-hour hospital in Melton, agreed the present council was too often divided on crucial issues.
“We have to change this 4-3 business,” he said.
As a member of the Melton Residents Association, he has helped to rid the streets of graffiti and has raised money for the paint needed to cover vandalised fences.
He intends to stand in Cambridge ward with a focus on Rockbank issues.
“Most particularly Rockbank needs urgent infrastructure and that is my focus,” he said.
“There are no doctors in Rockbank. Buses don’t even go there. We are talking about essential services.”
