Daniel Sheehy: Friends gather for special tribute

DAMIEN Sheehy says there isn’t a day that passes when he doesn’t think of his son Daniel, who died in a house fire in March.

“It’s just very, very sad,” the Melton South father said.

“The other day I walked out of the supermarket and I just realised that my son has died and I started crying. It is still so surreal.”

Last Thursday marked three months since the 18-year-old’s death. About 50 of his friends gathered outside the Sheehys’ burnt-out house on Friday night to pay tribute.

Mr Sheehy set up a whiteboard on which friends wrote messages of support.

He said the night was meant as “a kind of closure” following requests to Melton Council to have the house demolished.

“It was a chance to say goodbye and to thank everyone for their support. Even the cops came past.

“Some people might disagree about demolishing the house, but I don’t think the house is a memorial.

“It’s not something I want to remember my son by. Maybe one day we could plant a tree for him.”

Melton’s Detective Senior Constable Michael Saliba said investigations into the fatal fire continued. Mr Sheehy urged anyone with information about it to contact police.
