PURE-bred dingo pups with bloodlines dating back 18,000 years will be on show during a Dingo Discovery Centre celebration.
The Toolern Vale centre, which has the world’s largest number of pure dingoes, will mark the births of two litters of pups with a party at Melton’s Tabcorp Park on July 1. Centre co-founder Lyn Watson said the first “dingoes’ birthday” event held last year proved popular with animal-lovers.
Next month’s celebration will include talks by visiting experts Professor Deborah Bird Rose, Dr Arian Wallach and
Linda Van Bommell. Children can enjoy environmental activities, face-painting and a ‘Wicked Wildlife’ show.
“I saw the [dingoes’ birthday] as a means for our fund-raising project to build a landmark visitor education centre at the sanctuary,” Mrs Watson said. Funds were also raised during a ‘doggy walk for dingoes’, organised by Cub Scouts, around Lake Caroline in Caroline Springs on Sunday.
Mrs Watson said the event showed an international connection between Scouts and wolf pack and cubs could be translated locally. “The local Cub Scout group at Caroline Springs was quick to grasp that Australia could have its own Australian brand of that relationship with the dingo. They took the idea to their own pack leaders.”
