Major haul as police saturate Melton roads

FEW Melton road users wouldn’t have been stopped at some stage last week, with three separate traffic operations taking place.

Melton police targeted unroadworthy cars and conducted random breath tests along the Melton Highway (pictured) last Monday.

Meanwhile, Operation Identify will continue until the end of the month.

Acting Sergeant Mick Downes said the operation was aimed at sidelining unroadworthy cars and stopping unlicensed drivers.

Police have already issued 12 notices for unroadworthy cars and 24 penalty notices for other offences, and they have conducted 140 breath tests.

The Sheriff’s Office also caught 72 people with more than 750 outstanding infringement warrants valued at more than $230,000 when inspectors hit the streets of Melton last week.

The operation was part of a crackdown to detect fine defaulters. Officers clamped the wheels of 17 cars, including one owned by a man with 74 outstanding warrants worth more than $22,000. It will be sold at auction.

Sheriff Brendan Facey said he was pleased with the results of the operation. “Ignoring fines does not make them go away, people are liable for their infringements and fine dodgers will end up paying more.”

Mr Facey said operations were a combined effort of VicRoads and Victoria Police. He said people having trouble paying their fines could ask for extra time or apply for a payment plan.
