MOORABOOL Council has delayed signing an anti-coal moratorium.
Moorabool Environment Group (MEG) was among 50 groups that asked the council to sign a document calling on the state government to ban all new coal and unconventional gas operations in the area until a thorough investigation has been conducted into possible environmental impacts.
But mayor Pat Griffin said the council needed more information on the moratorium before putting pen to paper.
“We need to get a report back understanding the implications of a moratorium,” he said. “We need to fully investigate what we’re signing off.”
MEG president Deb Porter said the moratorium was about sending a clear message to the government that residents don’t want the area to become the next Pilbara.
