Melton: Body found in car at botanic garden lake

UPDATE: A 46-year-old Melton West man was found dead inside his four-wheel-drive on Sunday after it veered off the Western Freeway and tumbled into Toolern Creek near Melton Botanic Garden.

The incident is believed to have occurred in the early hours of the morning, but it wasn’t until 11.30am that the wreckage of the Toyota Landcruiser was spotted by passers-by.

Police believe the vehicle may have clipped the road’s railing before flipping down the embankment. It was partially submerged in the water when found.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

Police are now investigating whether speed, fatigue, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Victoria Police’s Acting Senior Sergeant Liam Gardner said these factors were not a good mix. “Speed, alcohol or drugs – none of those things mix with driving.” He said it was a timely reminder leading into Easter for drivers to take more care on the roads.

The death of the man takes the state’s annual road toll to 70, three more than at the same time last year.

Melton police are still investigating the circumstances of the accident and are keen to speak to any witnesses.
