THE National Broadband Network Co is considering appealing Moorabool Council’s decision to reject a planning permit for an internet tower in Yendon.
As reported by the Weekly, the council last month dismissed NBN Co’s application for a 40-metre monopole on private property following six months of debate. The company and objectors had reached a compromise for the tower to be moved 240metres west from the closest home, before the landholders changed their mind at the last minute.
NBN Co community relations adviser Tony Gibbs said a decision on an appeal would be made soon. “We are reviewing our network design for the area. A decision will be made shortly … as to whether NBN Co will appeal the decision or look to pursue other alternatives.”
Nine objectors had flagged possible health and radiation risks, visual aesthetics and inadequate consultation as reasons for opposing the plan.
The CFA said there were no fire safety issues with the proposed tower. “CFA has no major issues with communications towers presenting unacceptable fire hazards,” a spokesman said.
“Better mobile and wireless internet coverage can offer greater means of communications during an emergency.”
