OBJECTIONS are mounting against a proposal for a ‘healing sanctuary’ to be built in a quiet Kurunjang neighbourhood.
Christian spiritualist church group The Light House has applied for a planning permit to construct a multi-use hall on the corner of Buckle Road and Cameron Court, where it would host ceremonies, clairvoyant readings, personal coaching, music lessons, meditation and choir sessions.
More than 35 residents met with Melton councillors last week to voice their concerns, arguing the proposed Heaven’s Gate Healing Sanctuary would be an over-development of the site. According to the application, the peak period on Sunday morning could draw up to 120 people.
Resident Grace Mercieca, who lives about 40 metres away, feared the building would bring an increase in traffic and harm neighbourhood character.
“This is a low-density, very peaceful and family-oriented area,” she said. “We love the rural feeling – the openness, the wildlife and the vegetation … we’re trying to keep it like this not just for us but for our children and preserve these little pockets we have.”
The applicant, Reverend Gordon McKenzie, said fears about the building were “baseless”.
“We’re based purely on peace and love and harmony, and that implies we have to have a quietness about us and serenity. If only people knew us and understood, they’d be celebrating with us. I really have thought this out and have had the community in mind.”
Mr McKenzie said the number of people coming and going from the site would be far fewer than the application allowed. “When one lodges an application for a permit, one needs to crystal-ball gaze … you have to allow for future growth. Typical attendance would be, at the top-end, mid-20s for evening sessions and the Sunday morning service would be in the 50s.”
Cr Broden Borg said many residents had bought properties in the area for its rural environment.
Public submissions closed on Thursday. The application will be considered by the council at a later date.
