BACCHUS Marsh bounced back from its defeat against Melton by kicking away from Lake Wendouree and winning by 31 points on Saturday.
The win ensured the eighth-placed Cobras would remain a cut above the bottom teams on the Ballarat Football League table, albeit three games off a top six pace.
While the match was even for much of the afternoon, Bacchus Marsh piled on seven-goals-to-two in a dominant third quarter to set up the 13.5 (83) to 7.10 (52) victory after leading by just three points at half-time.
Bacchus Marsh coach Dave Callander conceded there wasn’t that much difference in output between the loss last week and this week’s victory.
“I thought the effort was similar last week to that of this week. We had 28 scoring shots last week compared with 18 this week,” he said.
“I just think we took our chances today and we were able to apply scoreboard pressure this week.”
Bacchus Marsh started off with the first three goals of the game but was kept relatively in check for the majority of the first half, as Lake Wendouree steadied.
The Lakers outscored the Cobras in the second term. However, the game was over just as quickly as the second half was started as Bacchus Marsh got right on top through Tyson Shea in the middle of the ground and big man Pat Schwalger providing a strong target up forward.
The Cobras kicked the first three goals of the second half inside four minutes and when Declan Phyland kicked the Cobras’ fourth unanswered goal 10 minutes into the term, the lead was out to 30 points. That proved too much for the Lakers to reel in, despite the best efforts of Ben Taylor and Gavin Webb.
Callander said the way his players adapted to the style Lake Wendouree played and the way they were able to move the ball against the Lakers was outstanding.
Taylor and Webb, along with Nick Aringo, were Lakers’ best in a day when 20 minutes of football ultimately proved the difference, while Shea, Phyland and Schwalger stood up for Bacchus Marsh.
