WITH an election due in October, Moorabool mayor Pat Griffin wants to see some fresh faces on council.
As an all-male council comes to the end of its four-year term, Cr Griffin advised budding candidates that gender and age were irrelevant, but passion for the community was imperative.
“I don’t care if they’re women, men or puppy dogs,” he said. “We need diversity in everything in life. People are free to exercise their democratic right to join a council.
“There are limited barriers to joining council, but people must learn what the job amounts to [before running].”
Cr Griffin, who expects to make a decision about his own future by August, said it was not the council’s fault “everybody is male and over the age of 48”.
He welcomed the fact that two women have already announced they will contest East Moorabool ward. East Moorabool ward councillor Michael Tudball said he was unsure if he would run in October. “I’m undecided at this point. I’m still very much tied up with issues and initiatives for this council at least until end of September when we enter caretaker mode.”
