AUSTRALIAN swimming may have James ‘The Missile’ Magnussen, but Moorabool just might have unearthed its own miniature weapon of destruction.
Hopetoun Park runner Andrew Amor (pictured) will be out to break his personal best time at this month’s national championships.
The speedy 11-year-old set a personal best of 9:28 minutes in the three-kilometre cross-country at last month’s state championships in Bundoora, finishing just two seconds behind the winner.
The run booked Andrew’s place in the 32-member team for the School Sport Australia athletics event in Adelaide on August 24.
The grade 6 Bacchus Marsh Primary School pupil has been taking running seriously only for the past three years after being inspired by his hero, Craig Mottram.
“I got into running through Little Athletics,” Andrew says. “I went in a few events and a few people said I was really fast so it went from there.” He and his father have been running 12 kilometres a week in preparation for the national meet.
Bacchus Marsh Grammar will also be represented in the three-kilometres cross-country race by grade 6 pupil Sophie McMinimee, after she recorded 10:23 minutes to finish second in the state finals.
