Warning on pest plants

Melton landowners are being warned to take steps to control serrated tussock. Department of Primary Industries biosecurity officer Deven McPhan said landowners had a legal responsibility to manage pest plants and animals to avoid affecting neighbouring farms or the natural environment. Fines of up to $33,800 can be imposed. Melton mayor Justin Mammarella said the council provided rate rebates to encourage eligible landowners to control invasive plants and animals on their property.

Residents’ group seeks members

Diggers Rest Residents Association is calling for community-minded people to join the group. A spokesman said that with the area expanding, there had never been a greater need for the group to have a voice. Details: 9740 1326

Thieves target new homes

Police are seeking information from the public after an airconditioner was stolen from a house under construction in Cooloongup Crescent, Melton West. The unit, valued at $3000, was taken between midday on August 25 and 6pm the next day. A heating unit was stolen from a block of units under construction at Reidy Rise, Melton West, between 5pm on August 25 and 7am on August 27. Technology equipment to the value of $7400 was taken from a house in Stewart Crescent, Rockbank, between 4pm on August 27 and 2pm the next day. Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

Kurunjang pavilion extended

Extensions to the Kurunjang Community Pavilion have been completed. Old change rooms have been converted to an umpires’ room and a first aid room, with four new changing facilities built to support two soccer fields at the site. A disabled change room was also part of the upgrade. A Melton Council spokesman said the additions would allow for boys and girls to access the facilities at the same time and encourage female participation in cricket and football.
