Council petitioned on traffic plan
Residents concerned about traffic congestion in Bacchus Marsh have submitted a 3300-signature petition to Moorabool Council. The Push Back for Woolpack Road group wants the council to lobby the state government to reverse its decision to reject plans for the construction of a roundabout and traffic bypass at Woolpack Road.
Measles group raises $2500
A Moorabool group committed to stamping out measles has raised more than $2500 through a series of charity events. Stamp Out Measles member Jennie Fraine said the significance of the group’s work hit home at a recent drumming workshop. “I asked, ‘Who here has ever had measles?’ Several older folk like myself raised their hands. The nine young people there, and their parents, did not. I think that is very telling.” The group will have a table of cards, jewellery, books and CDs at the next Darley market on Saturday, October 6. To donate, call 5367 6976.
Moorabool says ‘no’ to fire refuges
Moorabool Council has rejected the Mount Egerton and Myrniong halls as options for a local neighbourhood safer place. The council said it would cost $50,000 to cover the Mount Egerton Hall with mesh to withstand an ember attack, while it would cost $15,000 to create an extensive tree buffer zone at Myrniong. The Weekly reported last month that Moorabool remained at the top of the list for potential sites for community fire refuges, with a community fire drill planned for Blackwood next month.
Shire to root out weeds
The council will use a $95,000 grant to remove invasive weeds and rabbits. A Department of Primary Industries spokesman said the funding would help remove serrated tussock, common across a large part of the shire.
More cash for pensioners
Pensioners across Moorabool have received an increase in their payments. Single people on the maximum rate of age, disability and carer pensions will get an extra $17.10 in their pockets each fortnight. Pensioner couples on the maximum rate will receive an extra $25.80 a fortnight combined.
