Now 67, Diane is a mother to six children, including the daughter she was forced to give up at birth. While she met her daughter five years ago, the pain of what happened was too much for the women to bear. They have since lost contact.
Jo Fraser, secretary of the support group, the Association of Relinquishing Mothers (ARMS) Victoria, said, unfortunately, Diane’s story was not unique. Ms Fraser said many mothers were told their babies had died at childbirth, only to find out 30 years later they were still alive.
Ms Fraser said ARMS was seeking support for affected mothers, including affordable counselling.
