“TAKE a picturesque walk along the Werribee River and experience ancient fragrant peppercorns and majestic river red gum.”
That’s the description of the river on the Visit Moorabool website, but some Bacchus Marsh residents are no longer buying into the hype.
“If we get tourists who read this stuff [on the website] and come down, they’d be disgusted,” resident June Fryer (pictured) said.
She said she was shocked on her last visit to Peppertree Park to find overgrown weeds, seats falling apart and the river in poor health.
“It’s sad because this used to be such a beautiful river but it’s become a fire hazard.”
An Environment Protection Authority spokesman said weeds and overgrowth were an issue for council.
“But if there is stormwater pollution, we will get involved.” Council did not respond to the Weekly‘s request for a comment.
