BACCHUS Marsh will be among the first regional towns to tap into super-fast broadband after the initial fibre-optic cable was installed on Wednesday morning.
Underground cabling was laid in the industrial estate near Griffith Street as part of the first National Broadband Network rollout in regional Victoria.
About 6700 houses and businesses in parts of Bacchus Marsh will be able to log on in the first half of next year.
“Bacchus Marsh hasn’t had great broadband access in the past,” NBN Co spokesman Trent Williams said.
“Local people can expect to connect early next year — around April, May and June.”
Mr Williams said the rest of the town would be connected by 2015, at the latest.
The high-speed internet service should be available across central Melton by next October.
“Small businesses in Bacchus Marsh can compete with those in the city and other metro areas,” Mr Williams said.
Once a street has access to the NBN, home and business owners will be able to contact their internet service provider to see how they can get connected to services.
Detailed information will be provided as the rollout continues.
Bacchus Marsh community college The Laurels recently launched a digital hub which allows residents to learn about the NBN and improve their online skills.
