Suburban star quality

A new fully-equipped dance studio coupled with teachers from prominent Melbourne institutions has given Galactic Dance & Events Australia in Melton the chance to bring inner-city quality to the outer suburbs.

Owner Andrew Micallef said: “We have hired dancers who teach at Ballarat University and Victoria College of the Arts to create a vibe that’s hard to beat, especially in our end-of-year productions”.

A professional dancer for 26 years and with a diploma in performing arts, Andrew has been in films (Moulin Rouge, Wog Boy) and even danced alongside Ricky Martin at the Logies. He now enjoys teaching and working with fellow dance instructors.

“It’s such an honour and a privilege to work alongside such inspiring and talented teachers. Watching their choreography and listening to how they teach makes me strive to better my craft.”

Galactic Dance has been open a year and already has 110 students in jazz, tap, ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, musical theatre and acrobatic classes. Zumba is coming. “Our students have won competitions across Victoria and some have performed in contemporary companies such as Collab, while others have danced at Disneyland Tokyo.”

For current and potential students he advises: “Nothing is out of reach, if you so choose. My greatest teacher always said you won’t regret trying.”

Galactic Dance & Events Australia is at 4/4 Norton Drive, Melton. Details: 9743 7773. Classes resume on Monday, February 4.
