Re: Vote to decide Sunbury’s future in Hume should be cast wider

I am pleased to see that Sunbury will be given a vote on the subject of “out of Hume”.

Sunbury is a great place to shop, do business and socialise, but it is treated like an aberration; “it looks like it is there but no one outside seriously believes it is.” It is time for Sunbury to become the proud place its position in the north-west of Melbourne dictates it should be. Only self-governing will allow that.

At the same time, the Diggers Rest area should be included in a Sunbury-area council. We shop there, socialise there and use its service industries. We are connected by rail line and senior students go to school there. The decisions made about Sunbury affect the residents of Diggers       Rest.

If people ask where I live, the reply is Diggers Rest near Sunbury —  not Diggers Rest near Melton.

Bernard Mortimer, Diggers Rest

Re: Hub may ease squeeze on Bacchus Marsh kindergartens (Weekly, May 28):

Give me a break, Moorabool council. You guys continually spend money on “plans”. How about building something? An indoor pool has been proposed for 20 years and it has been “planned” multiple times, with more money for “planning” in your new budget. Sure, you built a new library; it took 10 years of planning, but it was built. First new building in over 40 years, though. Just get on with it and build us some badly needed infrastructure and resources. While you’re at it, do something for our youth and fix the traffic.
