Secure dogs, Moorabool council tells owners

MOORABOOL residents are being urged to prevent their pets from wandering after a spate of incidents in Blackwood.

The council has received eight reports of dogs causing nuisance in the area since January, with another seven complaints of dogs wandering and one reported attack. In one incident, a Blackwood woman and her child were unable to leave their car after a large black dog jumped on it.  The woman had reportedly seen the dog wandering around on previous occasions.

The council said reports of dogs rushing at people, chasing cars and wandering into properties had increased in the past month.

Chief executive Rob Croxford said dog owners had an obligation to make sure their animals were secure.

“We remind people to be vigilant about their dogs’ whereabouts, and to ensure dogs do not stray onto neighbouring properties,” he said.

“Council also encourages members of the public to report any sightings of roaming dogs.”

Blackwood’s only off-lead area is at the recreation reserve. Dogs can exercise off-lead after 4.30pm on weekdays and on Saturday and Sunday when the reserve is not in use for sporting or special events.

To report wandering dogs, phone 5366 7100 or 0400 501 696 (after hours).
