Coburn Primary School left dry after meter theft

POLICE are investigating the theft of a water meter and copper pipes at Coburn Primary School that led to pupils being sent home early.

The school’s large water meter and surrounding pipes, which feed water to the entire school, were stolen by thieves early last Tuesday morning.

Students were sent home early because there was no drinking water available.

Pipes were also taken from Rockbank Primary School on the same day.

Melton’s Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks said there was a small “black market” for expensive plumbing and equipment.

“There have been occasional similar thefts across Melbourne, including one in Melton,” he said. “The public are urged to report suspicious behaviour around schools and building sites. Obviously, after-hours and weekends are prime times for these thefts to occur.”

Western Water customer and community relations general manager Peter Donlon said the authority supplied mobile drinking water for students and teachers at the school while water was disconnected.  “Our field crew attended immediately and worked to repair the damage. A private plumber was also used [by the school] to repair damage on the school ground side of the incident.’’

Cambridge, Coburn and Watts Residents Association president Nathan Miles was one of many parents called to pick up children.

“It’s disgusting that thieves would target a children’s primary school and leave the school without water,” he said.

“It is such a stupid and selfish act … hundreds of kids have been affected as well as the dedicated staff.”
