THE Weekly’s Andria Cozza was last Friday announced a winner at Victoria’s prestigious EVAs Media Awards (Eliminating Violence Against Women Media Awards).
She won Best Online News/Feature for her piece titled Standing up to family violence.
The 2013 EVAs, for print, television, radio and online media, honours journalists for reporting excellence and contributing to the prevention of violence against women.
The judge described Ms Cozza’s piece as “an incredibly well written and powerful piece giving voice to a survivor and revealing the reality of living with family violence including rape and sexual assault”.
“Andria Cozza’s article honestly articulates the horors of sexual assault whilst avoiding being graphic or voyeuristic,” the judge’s citation continued.
“Andria challenges existing social acceptablity of family violence by including damning statements by Judiciary against the excuses made by perpetrators.
“Forms of family violence are listed in detail, providing critical information and also reminding the reader of the criminality of family violence.”
The judges also praised Ms Cozza for incuding a range of family violence support service contacts in her piece.
