Aboriginal celebrations shared in Moorabool

ABORIGINAL elders celebrated Moorabool’s first National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee Week with a ‘‘welcome to country’’ by Bryon Powell in Ballan on July 7.

Celebrations continued with the raising of the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian flags. Dannielle Cooper, spokeswoman for the Indigenous Group for Residents in Bacchus Marsh and Surrounds, said watching children pass flags was a great display of a united community.

A rainbow serpent puppet brought colour to a community fun day at the Mechanics Hall, featuring music performances, a sausage sizzle, craft activities and an art exhibition.

Bacchus Marsh celebrated with a welcome to country performed by Wurundjeri elder Ron Jones and a flag-raising ceremony and shared meal at Bacchus Marsh Town Hall.
