Olympic flame burns within for Colby Lesko

BACCHUS Marsh College sprinter Colby Lesko is racing ahead in life.

The 18-year-old sprinter was last month presented with the Pierre De Coubertin award.

Named after the founder of the modern Olympics, the prize recognises students who demonstrate academic excellence and sporting prowess while exemplifying Olympic values.

Lesko, a year 12 student, was nominated by the school’s sports co-ordinator Kara Smith, who calls him a “quiet achiever”.

She says she nominated him for his exceptional sprinting ability and his noble gesture at the school’s athletics carnival, when he offered to forfeit his place in several events so others could participate.

The award was presented by Olympic marathon runner Steve Moneghetti at an assembly last week.

Lesko says the honour was “special because it shows my love for sports and the Olympics and eggs me on to keep working hard, keep improving.’’
