Bowls Victoria: Melton eases into pennant finals

Melton capped off a brilliant season in Bowls Victoria’s metropolitan pennant by qualifying for finals at the weekend.

The club secured its place in the division 1 top four with a crushing 81-64 win against Eltham.

Melton Bowls Club secretary John Adams said it was a fantastic performance.

“We were third going in yesterday and were playing the fifth side,” he said.

“We just said, do as we have been doing and, being at home, we should win.

“At one stage we were 43 shots up so we were pretty confident and we never looked like losing it, really.”

Melton goes into the finals in hot form, having won three of its past four matches.

The only game of the four the club didn’t win was its round 17 match against Elsternwick, which was declared a draw.

In that month-long stretch, Melton defeated Werribee by 21 shots.

Adams said making the division 1 finals in the club’s fourth season in the metropolitan pennant competition was a huge result.

“With the population of Melton, we only have 140 members,” he said.

“To be one of the powerhouse clubs you need about 200 members and gradually develop the younger ones into good bowlers.

“We have done enormously well in a short time. It’s just about trying to recruit a few more good players and keep developing the youngsters so we can go to the next level.”

While Melton and Werribee are squaring off, the other semi-final will be played between Altona and Essendon. Both matches are on Saturday with the winners to meet in the section grand final on Sunday.
