Stage set for players group in Bacchus Marsh

Theatre enthusiasts are involved in talks to launch an amateur playhouse and production company in Bacchus Marsh.

Moorabool councillor John Spain said the creation of a group to put on musicals, radio shows and plays would provide a valuable social outlet and could uncover hidden talents.

“We could have anything to do with entertainment, even a movie night where we show locally made movies,” he said.

“The past six weeks has been about discovering where there’s interest, and we’re hoping to get this thing rolling and attract younger people and families.”

Bacchus Marsh resident and sketchwriter Herman Jansik was part of the former Bacchus Marsh Players in the 1980s.

“We used to put on all sorts of little shows, from old English pub shows and songs, to cockney shows and singalongs,” the 75-year-old recalls.

“And all to a packed hall. We made a fair bit of money and it all went to the hospital, and that’s what we should bring back.”

Cr Spain said the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall, where the players group performed, would be an ideal venue.

“They’ve got a great stage and a huge auditorium. When the Moorabool Light Orchestra used it, they packed it out.”

David Leach, a member of Bacchus Marsh’s Speak Easy Radio Players, said his group was keen to become involved.

Mr Jansik said an accordion group based in Altona had also expressed interest.

“We’d love to start rehearsals in June or July and put on a show in September, but we need people to get on board and help run it,” he said.

An information meeting will be held in the supper room at Bacchus Marsh Public Hall at 1.30 pm on Saturday, April 12.
