Reckless Altona rider arrested after high speed chase in Melton

Melton highway patrol officers made a daring arrest last week as an Altona motorcyclist clocked almost 200km/h on the Deer Park bypass.

The 37-year-old man was travelling on the busy Western Highway at 5.20pm on Wednesday when he approached members of the highway patrol at high speed, only slowing down as he saw the unmarked police car.

Police say they then followed the motorcycle for about a kilometre, clocking it at 195km/h in a 100km/h zone.

They said that when the rider exited the highway at Robinsons Road, he tried to evade police but veered onto a grass area where he fell off his bike.

It’s alleged that as police arrested the offender a scuffle broke out and members of the force received minor injuries.

Leading Senior Constable Allan Edwards said the man had been charged with resisting arrest, assaulting police and exceeding the speed limit.

His motorcycle has been impounded for 30 days and police are investigating his movements before the incident.
