Bacchus Marsh got the points early to beat not only Lake Wendouree but also the rain in their Ballarat Football League clash on Saturday.
The Cobras kicked four goals in the opening quarter for a 20-point lead at the break, which they were able to maintain in the second.
With the rain bucketing down in the second half, scoring became a problem for both
teams .
The Cobras hung on to win 8.10 (58) to 6.8 (44).
Cobras football manager Adam Sutherland praised his team’s first quarter which set up the win.
“The rest of the game was a fairly even contest.
“We always look for a good start, and our attack on the ball and conversion this time were really good.
“The first half gave us pretty decent conditions … when the rain came in the second, it became a slog and very difficult to score.
“Declan Phyland, who has been one of our better players, was concussed in the first 10 minutes of the game … that didn’t help.”
Sutherland said the most pleasing aspect of the win and the team’s performances this year had been the young players.
“A number of younger players kept up their form on the weekend,” he said.
“From a club point of view, our recruits have been what we thought they would be. And the younger players, who are the core of our side, have stepped up. They need to keep making progress.”
Tyson Shea was the best for the Cobras, keeping Lake Wendouree recruit and
two-time J. J. Liston Trophy winner Steve Clifton quiet.
“Our under-18 captain, Kane White, made a fantastic debut and Logan Blundell and Cam Richardson were also really good,” Sutherland said.
This week, the Cobras will Sebsatpool, which was defeated 21.18 (144) to 7.5 (47) by Darley.
Jake Edwards kicked four goals for Darley and Rhys Ellis kicked three in a best-on-ground performance.
“Sebsatpool are down on luck at the moment … I think they’re on the bottom of the ladder,” Sutherland said.
“We are hoping to go there and increase our scoring pressure.”
In other matches, Redan defeated Melton South in a low-scoring affair at Mars City Oval.
The lead swapped between the teams all day but by game’s end Redan was in front 5.13 (43) to 5.9 (39).
Mathew Sutton and Daniel Vasjuta both kicked two goals for Melton South, with Daniel Hiller named best on ground.
Melton had the bye.
