Big V basketball: Melton’s shooting woes prove costly

Taking on the Seahawks in Warrnambool was always going to be a tough ask for Melton’s Big V division 1 basketball side. And it panned out that way on Saturday, with the visitors going down 82-71.

The Seahawks, who have lost only three games for the season and are comfortably in the top four, blitzed the Thoroughbreds in the first and third quarters on their way to an 11-point win.

The Thoroughbreds’ shooting woes returned after they shot well from the field last week against Sunbury.

Warrnambool got off to the better start on Saturday and looked more at ease from the field, building an early eight-point lead.

The Thoroughbreds fought hard to get back into the game in the second term, putting up six more field goal attempts and trying their luck from beyond the three-point line.

It didn’t work, though, with poor shooting allowing the Seahawks to match the visitors on the scoreboard and maintain their lead heading into the main break.

The third quarter was Melton’s best. But while the Thoroughbreds upped their shooting percentage, they were still outscored by the Seahawks, who shot
50 per cent from the field.

The Thoroughbreds were further hampered by their poor free throw form, hitting four of 10 shots for the quarter.

After trailing by 11 at the final break, the Thoroughbreds again had more shots from the field in the fourth but were unable to reduce the margin.

Melton finished up shooting just 32.5 per cent from the field and 60 per cent from the free throw line, costing the visitors any chance of an upset.

Jeff Crowe led the Thoroughbreds with 22 points, while Anthony Kimble had 21 points and 15 rebounds.

The Thoroughbreds (7-7) are seventh on the ladder and will play Mildura Heat in Melton on Sunday.
