Peek behind the scenes at Bacchus Marsh’s Grant Lodge

More than 50 people visited Grant Lodge earlier this month, when the Bacchus Marsh aged care centre opened its doors as part of an International Open Day for aged care.

The facility, run by Djerriwarrh Health Services, has been open almost 30 years, and looks after 30 high-care residents.

Grant Lodge resident Lorraine Downie, who moved to the centre a few months ago, said the staff had made her transition easier.

“They’ve been so kind,” she said.

“Open days are a good idea as they offer prospective residents and their families some insight into how it all runs.”

Djerriwarrh chief executive Bruce Marshall said the day gave visitors a better understanding of what was on offer and the residents just went about their daily activities.

“Whether it be playing cards, watching TV or chatting away, it allowed visitors to come and talk about what life’s like,” he said.

Grant Lodge’s manager of 14 years, Tineke Carr, said it was a rewarding job that allowed her to make a positive difference to others’ lives.

“What I like most is the individual-based care we’re able to provide, really getting to know everyone and helping them stay in contact with family and friends via all modes, including Skype,” she said.

Julie Pywell, who has worked at Grant Lodge for two years, said the first International Open Day was a success.

“It’s a positive promotion of aged care and helps dispel any myths.”
